Profile: The King label was founded in 1943 by Syd Nathan in Cincinnati, Ohio. The label was one of the first to see the potential in black music. With a unique discography spanning up to 1968, by then it was sold to Starday records and the label changed the name to Starday King. It was around 1971 that Starday sold James Brown's contract to Polydor. Brown himself pretty much WAS the King label and the artist that grossed the most money. In 1975, a label called Gusto started reissuing King releases. All with original artwork and logos. They also revived the Federal label and DeLuxe sub-labels in the process. James Brown most known 45's were released on Starday King.
